Job Description:
The Refineries Risk Officer role is a member of the Risk team, delivering pnl and position analysis to Management and Front Office. The Refineries Risk Officer works closely with fellow Distillates officers and provides backup for their activities and vice-versa. The role reports to the Risk Manager.
Main Responsibilities
Produce and validate daily P&L and exposure reports for refinery-related trading activities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Monitor refinery cracks, margins, and hedging strategies, ensuring proper alignment between physical and paper positions.
Reconcile trading positions, both physical and derivatives, across systems and with front office to ensure integrity of risk metrics.
Provide refinery-specific performance analysis to management, including gross margin analysis and benchmark comparisons.
Monitor daily risk metrics (e.g., VaR, Greeks, position limits), identify anomalies, and escalate deviations promptly.
Ensure accurate and timely trade capture in ETRM systems and coordinate resolution of discrepancies with the trading and operations teams.
Monitor and support the creation and maintenance of MtM price curves, ensuring they reflect market reality and are consistent with trading strategies, refining economics, and valuation principles across physical and paper positions.
Track inventory levels, logistics movements, and related costs to ensure accurate representation of positions and P&L.
Liaise with traders and refinery managers to explain P&L drivers, market moves, and structural changes in positions.
Support month-end closing processes, working with accounting to reconcile results and book provisions.
Coordinate with back office and accounting on settlement, invoicing, and correct financial reporting of trades and associated costs.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of reporting tools and controls, including automation of recurring processes and enhancement of dashboards.
Provide backup coverage for adjacent desks (e.g., Gasoil).
Profile
University degree, preferably in Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics or Finance
Minimum 4 year in a similar role in the commodity trading business, preferably within a major trading house, an oil major, investment bank or hedge fund
Curious and proactive, rigorous and meticulous
Demonstrated Business Analysis skills
Comprehensive understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models
High knowledge of analytics tools and technologies.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Python
Eagerness to learn and ability to work with limited supervision (if already experienced)
Strong entrepreneurial spirit, naturally curious and proactive
Excellent attention to detail; rigorous and meticulous
Strong interpersonal skills
High degree of accuracy and efficiency under set deadlines
Fluent in English, both written and spoken, French is a plus
Strong communication and organizational skills
Knowledge in Oil refining risk management
